Access from the 2nd court yard to the middle portico and from the middle portico to the upper portico is via a broad set of steps flanked by a sloping pavement. The steps align perfectly and point to the temple of Karnak on the eastern back of Thebes. The procession from this temple to Karnak was guarded by sphinx.
